Trinidad Generation Unlimited (TGU) is committed to contributing to the sustainable development of its surrounding communities that brings both long-term social and economic benefits. We support initiatives that build economic, social, human and cultural capacity, which will support our legacy. TGU has implemented several programmes in the areas of training and education, health, sport, community development, and arts and culture in the La Brea community, and is a key sponsor and supporter of initiatives implemented by various groups and entities that operate within both our fence-line and national communities.
Our commitment to our people, our community and the nation resonates in everything that we strive for, and we remain dedicated to enriching the nation through our corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. We are proud to work with the La Brea community to improve our environment and increase opportunities for sustainable growth, education and development.
We believe that supporting education is an important way of supporting social sustainability. One of the ways we do this is through our Annual Excellence Awards Ceremony where high achievers throughout the community are awarded and honoured for their hard work and diligence in their educational pursuits. Students from primary to secondary schools are recognised, and this initiative has been a huge success in inspiring the youth within our surrounding communities.
Through our ‘Saving Sight’ initiative, we provide vision screenings and spectacles (glasses) to La Brea primary and secondary schools students. Vision screenings are carried out at the seven primary schools and one secondary school in the area, and spectacles are provided to those in need. To date, over 2,500 students have been tested and 500 students have received spectacles. This initiative further solidifies our commitment to the development of future generations.
Additionally, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the far-reaching social and economic implications. #TeamTGU rallied together to implement projects through the company’s Employee Volunteerism Initiative in 2020 and 2021 with the following:
- Donated medical equipment, including a new 28 cubic ft refrigerator to the COVID-19 Testing Laboratories at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex and to the Trinidad Public Health Laboratory in Federation Park. In addition, five “Aerosolisation Hood” kits to protect physicians at the San Fernando General Hospital were donated through an initiative from The University of the West Indies.
- Provided financial assistance to the St. Michael’s School for Boys to assist with their ongoing refurbishment.
- Through the Ministry of Education’s Adopt a School programme, TGU assisted with the donation of electronic devices to eight schools within our fence-line community, helped established sanitisation stations and donated cleaning supplies. These schools — La Brea RC Primary, Brighton Anglican Primary, Vance River RC Primary, Guapo Government Primary, Vessigny Secondary, Rousillac Hindu Primary, Rousillac Presbyterian Primary and Delhi Road SDMS — also received assistance with some much needed infrastructural repairs.
- Grocery vouchers were donated to the Helena Charles Home for the Aged in La Brea, Serenity Place Women’s Home in Cochrane Village and the Ferndean’s Children’s Home in Point Fortin, as well as to other persons in need within the community.
- Children in the School Feeding Programme within all eight fence-line community schools received grocery vouchers during 2020 and 2021 to assist with the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
